What is Family Day Care
YWCA of Canberra Family Day Care is a community based quality child care service which offers professional and supervised care for children from birth to 12 years of age in the private homes of approved Family Day Care childcare workers who are employees of the YWCA of Canberra.
YWCA of Canberra Family Day Care is organised and supported by a central co-ordination unit which supports child care workers, arranges the placement of children according to the needs of families and child care workers, and monitors the care provided. It also undertakes necessary administrative responsibilities such as collecting and receipting fees, paying childcare workers, and ensuring government accountability requirements are met.
Child Care Benefit and Rebate is available to eligible families to reduce the cost of care. For more information, see http://www.dest.gov.au/sectors/early_childhood/default2.htm

- are recruited, trained and monitored by the YWCA of Canberra Co-ordination Unit staff
- have access to accredited training to develop their skills and knowledge of children and child care practices
- represent the cultural diversity which exists within the community
- have current First Aid certificates
- have had a police check undertaken on them and all adults in their home prior to commencing employment.
Our child-focussed philosophy
The philosophies of the YWCA of Canberra Family Day Care scheme parallel those of early childhood studies. As providers of childcare we aim to offer total care for children whilst they are placed with us. The basic needs of their physical, social, emotional and cognitive development are recognised. We are aware of the special needs of children and realise the uniqueness of each child. Children are nurtured in a happy, safe and stimulating environment.
We also aim to provide the best possible care for children through promoting an awareness that children need to be treated equally irrespective of culture, race, religion, socio-economic and family background and physical and intellectual ability.
We believe it is important that our childcare workers are happy working with children and that their primary concern is for the well being and welfare of the children in their care and therefore the provision of quality childcare. We assist in maintaining this quality through providing:
- pre-service home safety checks and training for all child care workers
- annual staff development day
- a range of in-service training sessions throughout each year
- frequent home visits by professional support staff
- adherence to ACT Licence conditions
- adherence to Quality Assurance Principles
- adequate insurance cover for all child care workers
- annual re-registration of childcare workers which involves thorough inspections of homes, checking safety and hygiene requirements
- additional support services such as toy library, playgroups, equipment loans and back-up facilities.
