We have compiled this resource for anyone who wants to establish a Walking School Bus or other shared walking arrangement for primary school children. The information will help parents, school communities or other organisations who want to establish and sustain a Walking School Bus program in their area.

Family walks at the lake
Families with children of all ages are invited to join a community walk led by the Heart Foundation on the first Sunday of each month.Meet at Biscotti’s coffee shop at Reconciliation Place (near the flags on the High Court side) at 9am for a relaxed walk around Central Basin.
Heart Foundation walks are free. Children must be accompanied by an adult
Other family walking ideas
- Find a walking group on the new Canberra walking portal
- Create a map to explore your local area with ACT Locate - just type in your address
- Orienteering ACTruns weekend events in winter and twilight events during daylight saving.
- Ranger guided or self-guided walks in national parks and nature reserves around the ACT
- Self-guided walks around Canberra
Active Travel
Other types of active travel, such as cycling, offer many of the same benefits as walking. For more information about active travel programs see:

From July 2011, Health Promotion Branch of ACT Health will begin a four-year Active Travel to School program. This program will investigate initiatives to encourage active travel to school, and this may include Walking School Bus.
