Board Membership and Board Traineeships

Do you have skills to support the strategic directions of a progressive
Canberra based service organisation?

Do you want to make a contribution to a leading worldwide women’s organisation?

Do you want to develop your Board and leadership skills?

The YWCA is one of the world’s largest women’s organisations, representing over 25 million women in 125 countries. In the ACT, we have been providing services since 1929 and now work in the areas of children’s services, youth services, community development, housing and accommodation, training and advocacy and policy development. The organisation is governed by a Board of Directors, made up of 12 women from across the community who are elected by the membership to lead the strategic direction of the organisation.

In the lead up to our Annual General Meetings held each October, we call for nominations to our Board of Directors as well as applications for our Board Traineeship program, and there are usually a number of vacancies for both. We are particularly interested in identifying young women (aged 30 or under) who are interested in becoming involved in our organisation.

These opportunities provide a great opportunity to take a leading role in an innovative and progressive organisation as well as developing skills and networks that can last a lifetime.

Board of Directors

As a company limited by guarantee, Board members become the legal Company Directors of the organisation. The key role of the Board is to set the strategic direction for the YWCA of Canberra. It is also the legally responsible body for the organisation ensuring that accountability measures are met. The Board is made up of voting members of the YWCA of Canberra and is answerable to the membership. As an organisation with a commitment to young women and to women in leadership, 30 per cent of the Board are 30 years of age or less when elected.

Board Traineeships

As an organisation committed to women in leadership, we have developed a Board Traineeship Program. The Traineeship Program offers women the opportunity to experience the discussion and decisions of a Board of Governance without the responsibility of being Directors. These Traineeships are aimed particularly at women who have had no or little Board experience to date. We offer three traineeships each year.

If you are interested in nominating for a position on the Board or for a Board Traineeship, please contact the Executive Director on 02 6175 9900 or e-mail canberra@ywca-canberra.org.au.

Potential Board members and trainees need to be members of the YWCA of Canberra. Click here for the membership form.
