YWCA of Canberra Committees of the Board

The Board of Directors have established a number of committees to support the work of the Board. Each committee is chaired by a member of the Board however membership of each committee is open to all YWCA of Canberra members. Committee involvement is a great place to develop your skills and potential, and contribute to the vitality and ongoing sustainability of your organisation.

A brief description of each committee is provided below. Experience/knowledge of the committee area would be an advantage but is not a prerequisite. Support, mentoring and training opportunities can be provided to facilitate your committee involvement.

We encourage all members, particularly young women members of the YWCA of Canberra to consider being involved.

Finance Committee

Finance Committee has responsibility for overseeing all financial matters for the YWCA of Canberra and provide recommendations to the Board of Directors in relation to the financial management of the organisation. Through ethical stewardship of its finances and assets, the YWCA of Canberra aims for financial, social and economic sustainability by ensuring the resources of the organisation are managed in a way that ensures an ongoing organisation for women in Canberra into the future.

Finance Committee meets on a monthly basis.

Human Resources Committee

Consistent with the Board’s governance role, the Human Resources Committee monitors and, as necessary, reviews Board’s human resource policies. This can include making recommendations to the Board on the strategic parameters for affordable staffing and human resource policies, and review and advise on human resource issues referred to the Committee by the Executive Director or the Board of Directors. An elected staff representative also participates in the Committee.

The Human Resources Committee is likely to meet six to eight times per year.

Membership Committee

The YWCA of Canberra aims to have a diverse range of women across the ACT community as members of the organisation. The role of the Membership Committee is to develop a membership strategy for the YWCA of Canberra, specifically to:

  • identify and propose actions to remove any barriers to membership
  • recommend strategies to improve the process or experience of joining the YWCA of Canberra
  • put in place specific actions to develop relationships with different groups of women in the ACT, particularly Indigenous women and women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

The Membership Committee meets four to six times per year.

Nominations Committee

As part of an international membership movement there are a number representative opportunities and initiatives at a local, national and international level for members to become involved with. The role of the Nominations Committee is to review applications and nominations and recommend to the Board suitable nominees who are able to further the aims and objectives of the YWCA of Canberra through participation or representation in these opportunities, as they arise. The committee meets on an as-needed basis as determined by the Chair (minimum of three times per year).

If you would like any further information about these committees or would like to become involved, please contact the Executive Director on 02 6175 9900 or e-mail canberra@ywca-canberra.org.au. Your interest and details will then be passed on to the relevant committee Chair.
